Downtown Macau

The centre of tourist activity – Downtown Macau, is the most interesting part of the island. Having been acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Sight in July 2005, the vast concentration of historical buildings, gardens, old cemeteries, and colonial architecture can be found around here. With 25 distinct sites, much of the areas activities encompass sight seeing and enjoying the unusual fusion of a Mediterranean and Oriental culture, where the intertwining cobbled streets house typical Chinese shops selling delicacies, crafts, clothes and antiques. The area is also the place to head if you are interested in getting to grips with the fascinating history of Macau, with high concentration of chronologically lead museums.

Essentially downtown Macau tells the story of the islands history and existing lifestyle beyond the billion dollar facelift of the Outer Harbour. Downtown Macau is home to the Grand Lisboa Casino and entertainment complex – the islands original old timer, the 52 stories strong structure is no shrinking violet. Reminiscent of a Fabergé egg” covered with a kaleidoscope of colors and a 1.2 million light emitting diode the icon Casino is the other face of Macau. A lazy afternoon spent in Senate Square is a soothing alternative to the bright lights of the casinos.
